Sutcliffe launches new residential division

Sutcliffe Construction has launched a new division that specialises in private property projects worth up to £1.5 million. Sutcliffe Residential focuses on high-specification renovations, extensions and new builds in the North Yorkshire Dales and Ribble Valley areas delivered with the skill and professionalism that Sutcliffe Construction is known for.

James Sutcliffe said “Over the years we’ve had many clients ask us to do residential jobs for them and we believe there is a gap in the market. Leading North Yorkshire-based construction company Sutcliffe Construction completes new £4.3 million state-of-the-art global training facility and 3,665 sqm warehouse and distribution centre for Belzona International at its Claro Road HQ in Harrogate. This is the company’s second project for Belzona International following on from the successful completion of an underground fire water attenuation tank project completed in 2016.

Belzona International specialises in erosion, corrosion and chemical protection and is a world leader in the design and manufacture of repair composite materials and protective coatings for machinery, equipment, buildings and structures. The new 3-storey building features a dual span hipped roof, Kingspan Benchmark cladding and a dock loading system. The steel frame and detailing was made by Sutcliffe at its Skipton-based steel fabrication plant.

A multinational with a 65-year history Belzona Polymerics has offices in Europe, North America and Asia and a global distribution network of over 140 distributors in more than 120 countries. Established in Elland, West Yorkshire in 1952, Belzona moved to Harrogate in 1957 where it pioneered the development of innovative polymer technology. In 2008, it invested £3.5 million to  expand its existing facility, create extra manufacturing capability and more staff facilities. The architect on the new build was Norr Architects and structural engineering consultant was Blue Sky Consultancy.

2017 has been a busy year for Sutcliffe Construction with new clients and great achievements for the local organisations, sports teams and athletes we support.

Sutcliffe Construction recently completed a prestigious renovation and restoration project on Skipton High street to create Alexander’s Bar and Restaurant. The £2.2 million project for PEEL Entertainment Group saw the conversion of a Grade II listed Georgian former shop and cafe into a sophisticated bar and restaurant with outside terraces and a secret garden in just six months.

Cherry Lyons, project director, PEEL Entertainment Group said; “The whole concept of Alexander’s was to create the kind of cosmopolitan fine-dining experience you’d find in a city. Inspired by our directors’ travels across Europe, the whole building had to be stripped back, completely renovated and finished to an incredibly high standard.”

The building has served the community in many roles over the centuries as a rented house, doctor’s practice, several retail outlets selling everything from leather goods to outdoor wear, and more recently in hospitality – first as the Russian Tea Room and lastly as Forage Restaurant. PEEL bought the building in 2016 and began its 18-month restoration project working with Groves Architects in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Sutcliffe Construction was appointed main contractor in early 2017 with a tight schedule to bring the building back to life by summer and use local subcontractors and craftspeople wherever possible. The project was complex – a complete renovation of a listed building on a site with restricted access to a tight schedule.

 “We chose Sutcliffe because it has the high skill sets to deliver the quality we wanted in the time we had and to the same high standards that PEEL demands from every project we do,” said Cherry Lyons. “During the tender process, Sutcliffe was the only company to come to us with an actual solution – they said ‘we can do it and here’s how we’ll do it’. The team is approachable and amenable which made it a pleasure to work with them. As project manager,  Sutcliffe gave me absolute confidence and trust in their abilities, skills and knowledge and that they would deliver on time. And they did!”

Project logistics were highly demanding due to the High Street location and land locked rear garden, which has been transformed into a stunning terrace and secret garden. This required a pro-active and innovative approach, including the use of a ‘spider crane’ and canal barge; using the canal for its original purpose to transport goods and materials. The internal fit out was complex and extensive including significant structural alterations, completely new M&E and very high quality finishes throughout the building.

Alexander’s offers a relaxed, social fine-dining experience with international small plates, sharing boards and a vibrant bar with live music  and offering a full day to night experience. It’s European feel and concept inspired by the Grand Tours of the Victorian and  Edwardian eras is the brainchild of  PEEL Entertainment Group Managing Director Susannah Daley who worked closely with the architect Robert Groves  and interior designer Kath Groves and drew on her own global travel experiences.

Family-owned Sutcliffe Construction is enjoying a growth period with contract values up by over 20 per cent in 2016/17 over 2015/16. Recently completed projects include an office development for TGE Investments in Leeds, and a cold store for food giant Dalziel Group.  It has increased its workforce by 50 per cent since 2010 and is actively recruiting new staff.

A busy spring and several new clients has rolled into an action-packed summer with Sutcliffe teams currently hard at work on multiple sites across the north of England.

In Harrogate, we’re halfway through developing a £4.3 million 3,665 sqm warehouse, distribution and training facility for multi-national client Belzona International, a specialist in the chemical protection industry. In Castleford, Sutcliffe is extending the cold store – chilled to minus 25 Celsius – at one of Dalziel Group’s 12 distribution centres. Our teams are also busy at Brooksbank Valves  in Elslack, Graphic Packaging International in Leeds and putting the finishing touches to Alexander’s Bar and Kitchen in Skipton.

Just finished is a stunning office block for TGE Investments on a 3,200sqm brownfield site in Leeds. Located off the busy JCT roundabout, this was an exciting project to build a 3-storey structure with a number of architectural features designed by architect John Wharton.

Sutcliffe Construction has launched a guide to help companies increase site capacity and grow their business without moving premises. ‘Making Room for Growth’ is based on 40 years’ experience working in the industrial and commercial sectors combined with an in-depth understanding of construction solutions, costs and project management. Leading northern construction company Sutcliffe Construction has completed the expansion GGR Group’s plant in Oldham with the addition of a 530sqm extension that forms a training/storage facility for spider crane operators. GGR Group, an award-winning national lifting products and services specialist, also contracted Sutcliffe to fabricate the steel frame, cladding and canopy trim to match the rest of the site.

The build, which took 8 weeks, involved a careful planning and execution working with limitations on crane usage and restricted heights because of proximity to major power lines. A phased development was scheduled so operations were not disrupted on the site.The architect on the project was John Barnes and the engineers were Bridgewater Engineers.

Leading North Yorkshire-based construction company Sutcliffe Construction has been appointed by independent Ilkley prep school to build a £1 million development set for completion in September. This is the company’s second project for Westville House School; having built the sports hall in 2002.

James Sutcliffe, managing director, Sutcliffe Construction, said: “Westville House School is a site Sutcliffe Construction knows well and this is an advantage as the new development is a challenge. Westville House is a busy school and health and safety is paramount. However, our knowledge of the site, combined with our expertise in complex phased construction projects, means we can ‘build smart’ and deliver the quality that Westville expects with minimum disruption to pupils, parents and staff.”

This project is the first phase of a long-term development plan and involves the creation of a new early years unit for children of nursery and reception age and a new school hub, which will link the new unit with the existing building, along with a new library and media suite, an upgraded ICT and DT facility and extensive new playground facilities.

Sutcon has just signed a 12-month contract with Fives Landis for an office refurbishment with structural alterations, a new roof and office refitting at its Cross Hills site.

Due to finish in January 2017, Sutcon has erected scaffolding for specialist work to remove the old offices, renew the roof and gutters, and has started the construction of new walls, offices and elevations. This is the fourth job for the world leading manufacturer of high-precision grinding machines for the car industry which has major plants in the US and UK. Previous contracts included creating a new milling area, a factory re-roof, two major extension of 42,000sqft and 3,600sqft and a new carpark for 243 cars.

In Huddersfield, we’ve just completed a 315sqm extension and doubled the car park space for clean controlled environment specialist, PBSC. In Keighley, we handed over our second job for precision engineering company Advanced Couplings – a 2-storey office suite constructed inside the factory which had reached full capacity. We also made the steel frame and fitted out the office. Two more containers including steelworks for Byworth Boilers and its clients AB Agri and Kones Food were finished in spring. In Oldham, we topped off a 530sqm extension for GGR group, a lifting products and services specialist, that forms a training/storage facility for spider crane operators. The steel frame, cladding and canopy trim to match the rest of the site were made by Sutcon too. Recently, we tested the rooflights – fitted by us back in 2000 – at Silent Night’s factory in Barnoldswick. All tested fully compliant so there’s nothing for them to lose any sleep over.
